Poem #2

April27

Suddenly the boob tube goes black
With a click and a hum the house goes silent
You never realize the blare of electricity
Until the air conditioners cause the grid to go into cardiac arrest

The only redeeming factor of heat are the power outages
When an electro-centered society is thrust into the dark ages
The flickering of fire light dances on the walls
And your imagination returns

You begin to image our beginnings
Simple people who gathered together, for safety, for sanity
In the darkness, alone, you could go mad
But when we are together there is something magical about fire
It brings about stories, and myths; legends and tales
It warms the soul with it’s dances; it mystifies the mind with it’s beauty
A simple song of secret power sung on burning tongues of gas

We would meet around giant infernos
We would let our souls sing through song and dance
We would remember our pasts, and celebrate our future
We would enjoy life together, in the comfort of community

But then a click, a hum, and light floods the room
I find myself back in these walls
I remember we are alone again in this mansion
My imagination dies as the tv sighs relief
And once again fills the house with sound
A sound that drowns you out
The hum of electric power, our greatest invention
Our greatest enemy

I sit silent
And wait for the next overdose
Come on spoiled citizens, crank your frozen air once more
Set your thermostats nice and low
For there’s nothing worse then being alone AND hot, right?
